Fantasmagorie - 1908
Fantasmagorie is a French film by Émile Cohl and is supposedly, it is the first animated cartoon.
Émil Cohl was a French artist and possibly the first cartoon filmmaker in Europe. He joined the Gaumont film company in 1908 and worked as a writer, eventually moving up to making animated cartoons after Gaumont tasked him with discovering how to make films similar to The Haunted House, a film released by Vitagraph and directed by J. Stuart Blackton in 1907 that used some of the first object animation techniques. Cohl made over 250 films using cut-outs, drawings, puppets, and other objects. |
